Curbing Gum Disease & Preventing Tooth Loss
Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems in the country as well as the world, estimated to impact half of adults in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Gaddam strives to catch the early signs of this infection as soon as possible to successfully treat the symptoms and prevent tooth loss. At each of your routine checkups, our team will screen your gums, and if we spot common symptoms like redness, tenderness, or frequent bleeding, we may recommend one of the treatment options listed below.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that we typically recommend for patients who are experiencing more progressed gum disease that can’t be remedied with an improved at-home oral hygiene routine. First, all plaque and tartar will be cleared from the surface of your teeth and down into the pockets of the gums. Next, we will clear away any hardened deposits of bacteria from the roots of the teeth. This will allow your gums to healthily reattach to your enamel and protect the vulnerable underlying roots.
Laser Periodontal Treatment

Using our Sol Diode Laser, we’re able to kill harmful, infection-causing bacteria with incredible accuracy. The laser emits a concentrated beam of light that can not only disinfect the pockets of the gums, but also vaporize any severely damaged gum tissue to prevent the infection from spreading. The laser also has a light touch, emitting practically no heat, sound, or vibration, creating a comfortable experience in the treatment chair.
Peridex Antiseptic Mouthwash

Peridex is an antiseptic chlorhexidine mouthwash that you use twice daily after you’ve brushed your teeth. It works to kill harmful oral bacteria that can lead to worsening gum disease symptoms and helps minimize gum inflammation. After a couple of weeks of use, our team will check in with you to see how effective it has been for you.
Gingivectomy

A gingivectomy is typically only recommended when gum disease has reached its later stages, also referred to as periodontitis. The process involves surgically removing severely damaged gum tissue with the use of our dental laser, offering a more conservative approach compared to a traditional scalpel and sutures. This procedure aims to minimize bone and tissue loss around the teeth that can lead to tooth loss as well as reduce chronic gum irritation and swelling.
