When it comes to flaws in smiles, stains are often something that many people want to avoid. No matter if you have your natural teeth or dental implants, you might want to have a bright look to help you feel confident. However, this tooth replacement acts lifelike, but should you worry about your results discoloring? Here’s what you should know and tips to avoid any tinting.

So, Can Dental Implants Get Stained?

Natural enamel can become stained because it is porous. Dark particles from foods and drinks, like coffee and berries, can find their way into these spaces and cause a yellow look to a grin.

That said, the restorations on top of dental implants don’t have this trait. They are made from high-quality materials that mimic the look of a homegrown smile, but they have a protective glaze over them as well. This helps make them more stain-resistant!

As great as this is, discoloration is still possible over time. The surface of your crown, bridge, or denture may become rough, and some tinting is possible. It may take longer than before, but it may be nearly impossible to avoid as you get daily use of your replacement! So, as it gets older, you may notice it looks a bit duller.

How Can I Keep My Dental Implants Bright?

Since your dental implants aren’t completely immune to stains, you can do your part to prevent this flaw from developing. Here are a few simple tips you can add to your routine:

  • Brush and floss twice daily to remove plaque, as this film of bacteria can hold onto pigments. Make sure you use a non-abrasive toothpaste. If you need help finding the right product, talk to your dentist or look for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance.
  • Limit how much dark-colored food and drinks you eat. Coffee, red wine, tea, berries, beets, and beetroots are just a few to keep an eye out for. If you do have them, then rinse with water to wash away any lingering particles in your mouth.
  • Quit using tobacco if you do. This habit can cause discoloration over time and implant failure if you aren’t careful.
  • Keep up with regular visits to your dentist! They will be able to monitor the health of your tooth replacement and polish the restoration. That way, it stays in great shape, and you feel confident knowing your smile looks aesthetic and stays strong.
